Lebanon should have one army, Maronite patriarch says

Lebanon's Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir says that he is opposed to the government's decision to allow the Hezbollah resistance forces to retain their weapons.

Speaking in Beirut before heading to Baabda Palace for talks with President Michel Sleiman on Tuesday, Sfeir stated that he is opposed to Hezbollah's intention to keep the resistance on an equal par with the Lebanese army, especially in regard to the national defense strategy, according to Hezbollah's Al-Manar satellite television network.

The Maronite patriarch added that he fears an armed resistance that would use its weapons on Lebanon's enemies one day, and turn them on their domestic adversaries the next.

Thus, he called on the Hezbollah resistance movement to integrate itself into the Lebanese army, saying, “The Lebanese army alone should confront the enemy.”

Whoever attaches paramount importance to his own interests over those of Lebanon destroys the country, Sfeir observed.

Hezbollah, whose political wing is part of the government of Prime Minister Saad Hariri, is commonly referred to as 'the resistance' in Lebanon. Lebanon's cabinet last week endorsed the Shia group's right to keep its arsenal of weapons. The unity government issued a statement saying it respected the right of Lebanon's army and 'its resistance' to 'liberate Lebanese territory.'

Hezbollah argues that it must remain armed to protect Lebanon against any potential aggression by Israel, which withdrew from southern Lebanon in 2000 after a 22-year occupation.
